Addiction Recovery

Ongoing Recovery

The OnGoing Recovery Program is an extension of the Westminster House residential Primary Care Program. It is necessary to provide a full continuum of care to clients seeking an exit to the cycle of addiction. This program focuses on long term sustainable recovery and improves social outcomes for women who have been chronic substance abusers.

The ongoing recovery component is what brings everything clients learned in their treatment into practical use. When you leave treatment initially it’s different. You’re making decisions on your own, traveling alone and you have to be accountable.

The transition is the key piece for long term recovery. Having somewhere to be accountable to, feel supported, working, and most importantly having a safe environment to utilize. The relapse prevention program allows clients to be solution-focused and look at areas of their life before the physical relapse.

Westminster House can offer recovery housing to client who have graduated from the primary care program. Clients progress to second stage programming and then move onto supportive recovery housing (RH) once the introspective writing modules are complete.

WHS recovery housing offers stable solution-focused housing that includes all the essentials such as food, utilities, toiletries and linens.  Additionally, the goal is to continuously prioritize and focus on your recovery while remaining under the continuum of WHS care, but to a lesser degree. RH is part of a step-down approach, and at this stage, additional privileges and responsibilities are offered.  WHS clients are expected to participate in group 3 times per week and attend mutual support group meetings in the evening. RH residents are given the opportunity to act as peer support and mentors to newer clients in the primary programs. The focus of RH aims to make a significant contribution to providing second-stage treatment clients with an opportunity to regain control and practice decision-making and provide a safety net to new women in the program. At this phase, the opportunity to participate in Ongoing Recovery is introduced. All WHS clients are encouraged to participate in the Ongoing Recovery Program that is the final stage of the continuum of care at Westminster House.

Food & Nutrition

Addiction Treatment Centers, Addiction Treatment Facility

Women arrive at Westminster House starving because feeding their addiction has been more important than feeding their stomachs. Often, women in early recovery are not ready for a nutrition behaviour change, since most are simply trying to get past the immediate crisis of addiction and the associated adjustments of abstinence. Entering treatment may even aggravate pre-existing dysfunctional and unhealthy eating behaviours. As a result, we strive to help develop healthy food and nutrition habits for women in recovery. Westminster House introduces nutrition at the onset of treatment. Supplemental vitamins are not administered at Westminster House without a prescription. Supplements do not contain the antioxidant potency of real food, because the phytochemicals that flourish in real food cannot remain stable in a supplemental form. The most important nutrient for addiction recovery is fibre, which is served at every meal. Eating fibre from food (not fibre supplements) improves gut function and achieves balance in the microorganisms that live throughout the GI tract.

The nutritional focus at Westminster House is not about what not to eat, but about what to eat. Nutrition is never punitive but rather framed as a helpful component of the recovery process and part of our holistic approach to addiction treatment.

Drug Addiction Treatment

Smoking Cessation

When you are considering Westminster House and quitting the habit of smoking at the same time, you may think to yourself, “I’m quitting using, I can’t overwhelm myself by quitting smoking, too! “Couldn’t it increase my chances of giving up?” or “I’d be way to anxious!”

The truth is, as explained in this smoking cessation in recovering alcoholics, published on the American Family Physician website, smoking can cause stronger cravings for the substance you are trying to recover from, increasing chances of relapse in recovery. Some cravings for your drug of choice, in early recovery, are due to the association between smoking and using. The article explains that recovering people who quit smoking report lower levels of anxiety and depression.

What are you willing to do to recover? How far are you willing to go to extend our new-found health and serenity? We spent so many years harming ourselves in our addictions, why pollute our bodies with unnecessary harm now that we’ve found this new way of life? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are numerous ways smoking harms our bodies and health, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, and many other debilitating disorders.

The good news is that Westminster House smoking cessation program provides support through Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) in the form of the Nicoderm Patch and out newly non-smoking clients participate in their own weekly 12 steps sobriety group.

If you have recently quit smoking or are considering it, here’s some good news for you! An article from Onlymyhealth cites 5 immediate health benefits of quitting smoking.

Aware of the health and recovery benefits of quitting smoking, Westminster House is a smoke-free environment. We understand that it is difficult to stop. Provided with treatment, we offer continued emotional support in quitting, as well as a smoking cessation program to help with the physical withdrawal from nicotine.

If you’re ready to quit smoking now, quit now has contacts and resources that can offer immediate assistance.

Family Support

Drug Intervention
Family Support is a resource established to assist family members and friends affected by addiction. Family Support Groups provide access to knowledgeable professional staff who offer families assistance and support while their loved ones are in treatment at Westminster House.

Often families blame themselves or feel tremendous guilt. It is important as the client becomes emotionally healthy that the families do as well. Most of all, when families become part of the process, the outcome of success increases. Families benefit from knowing what is happening at the house day today. They also benefit from learning the 12-step philosophy and language. This gives the family hope and something to work towards together.

Family members are guided to work on their own issues, develop self-care techniques, and learn how to support their loved ones. Continuing care recommendations are given to family members to support their ongoing recovery.

Family Group is facilitated at Westminster House every Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Medical Monitoring

Westminster House can provide Medical Monitoring for clients who require it for their Clinical Assessment and Individualized Treatment Plan. We can provide random testing for 12 of the most commonly used drugs, Substance Abuse Medical Monitoring, as well as Workplace Drug and Alcohol Training.

Medial Monitoring is performed whenever a family member, health practitioner, employer, legal entity, or athletic organization needs to determine whether a person has illegal or banned substances in his or her body, or is compliant with prescribed medications. It may be ordered to help a family regain trust in their loved one, prior to the start of some new jobs and insurance policies, and at random to satisfy workplace, court-ordered, adherence monitoring, or athletic drug testing program requirements.

Drugs-of-abuse testing may also be ordered by a health practitioner to monitor a known or suspected substance abuse patient, or whenever a person has signs and symptoms that suggest drug use. Here are some of the signs that someone may be under the influence:

  • Dilated or small pupils

  • Drowsiness

  • Slow or slurred speech

  • Agitation

  • Nausea

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Delirium

  • Seizures

  • Changes in blood pressure or heart rhythm

Intervention for Addicted Women

It’s challenging to help a loved one struggling with any type of addiction. Sometimes a direct conversation can start the road to recovery. People who struggle with addiction are often in denial about their situation and unwilling to seek treatment. They may not recognize the negative effects their behavior has on themselves and others, then a more focused approach is needed. You may need to join forces with others and take action through a formal intervention.

An intervention presents your loved one with a structured opportunity to make changes before things get even worse and can motivate someone to seek or accept help. Consulting an addiction professional, such as an interventionist can help you organize an effective intervention. Substance use or addiction professional will take into account your loved one’s particular circumstances, suggest the best approach, and help guide you in what type of treatment and follow-up plan is likely to work best.

addiction treatment

Westminster House Society (WHS) works closely with certified interventionists to ensure that clients have a smooth transition from intervention to residential treatment.  Our intake specialist can connect you to an interventionist specific to the needs of your loved one, 604-524-5633.

What you should know about an intervention:

The role of an interventionist is to help families understand how to best how to end the pain and trauma of addiction. They guide the intervention process and help the families to communicate with their loved one. An interventionist offers 3 choices of treatment and offer only licensed or registered programs such as WHS.

An interventionist is not:

  1. A motivational speaker
  2. The family’s primary therapist
  3. A treatment center employee

After the intervention, it is recommended for the family to engage in its own recovery.  Our family group program can help 604-524-5633.

Please call Westminster House directly for a confidential consultation and referral to one of our affiliated interventionists based on the needs of your loved one:
